Weed in Karagandy, Kazakhstan: my experience

Hi, smokers! You probably know that cannabis laws and regulations vary from one county to another, so let’s go deeper and try to understand what is going on with weed in Karagandy. My post covers information about weed laws, regulations, general attitude of locals and cops, hash VS weed availability and pricing, failures and success in finding weed in Karagandy.

My trip to Karagandy is over, these 10 days were perfect, so while memory is fresh I decided to write this post, who knows may be useful to someone. Being a regular cannabis smoker I could not imagine my stay in Karagandy without some daily joints. So from the very first day of my stay I started looking for weed…

Attitude of locals to cannabis in Karagandy

Even though high THC cannabis is strictly regulated in Karagandy - local inhabitants of Karagandy are not against it at all. Young people and tourists are top target audiences for weed dealers. This does not mean you may walk and smoke joints on the streets, but also no one will be too surprised seeing someone smoking weed.

As Simon told - even local cops in Karagandy sometimes use cannabis. So in general we may conclude that the atmosphere in Karagandy is relaxed when we speak about cannabis. Just behave correctly and watch your back - and everything should be cool.

Simon shared with me a small joint of some unknown indica strain that evening, this was exactly what I needed. We were a little bit drunk and were smoking near my hotel directly on the street near trash containers, and it seems I saw other guys doing the same on the opposite side of the street.

One joint is good - but I needed weed for the whole period of my stay in Karagandy , so asked Simon if he could share contacts of his cannabis dealer. The answer was negative, simply because his dealer did not accept new people. But as we became close after the joint - Simon agreed to become my dealer for the nearest days, so all my issues with weed were resolved, thanks to Simon!

Cannabis regulations in Karagandy, Kazakhstan

It's crucial to emphasize that cannabis, marijuana, and hashish are strictly prohibited in Karagandy. You won't find coffee shops selling high-THC marijuana strains here. While medical CBD cannabis might be accessible through licensed dispensaries, it necessitates a doctor's prescription, and it's essential to note that CBD doesn't produce psychoactive effects.

While at a club, I had the opportunity to meet Simon, who relocated to Karagandy three years ago and is well-versed in the local drug culture. According to Simon, despite the legal prohibition of cannabis, law enforcement officers generally adopt a lenient attitude towards marijuana, with some even being cannabis enthusiasts themselves.

But what if you get caught with weed in your pocket in Karagandy?

According to Simon - if you have not more than 10g of weed or 5g of hash and you are not doing any other bad things in public - cops should not punish you. They should just ensure you are not a dealer who sells stuff, and after a short talk should leave you alone and just confiscate your stuff (to smoke it themselves haha).

There are some stories about dirty cops who try to get a bribe from tourists with weed in Karagandy, but these stories are rare, also better not to do this cause you may be arrested for this as a separate crime. Easier just to watch you back and not to walk with large amounts of weed in your pockets.

Where can one acquire cannabis in Karagandy?

Although I personally didn't face any issues with obtaining cannabis in Karagandy thanks to Simon, he did enlighten me about the process (and not just related to cannabis).

Typically, higher-level dealers procure their inventory from wholesale darknet websites. In theory, you could navigate the complexities of using darknet platforms to have your order delivered in a matter of days or even weeks. The website thehiddenwiki.com provides all the necessary links to make purchases in the darknet using the Tor browser and cryptocurrencies. However, this method is generally more suitable for those seeking larger quantities and have the luxury of time (several days) for delivery.

But if you have a short trip to Karagandy or vacation + need not too much weed and right now - only small local dealers may help you. Walking dark streets in a search for a strange-looking person who will sell you something that looks like weed for cash is still an option, but this is not the best way to spend time in Karagandy and does not guarantee you any success. Today almost all dealers went online already, so they arrange the delivery of stuff after taking crypto instead of cash. They try to avoid meetings in person so you just select the approximate drop off point, and get a photo where exactly to take your stuff after the delivery. Stuff is usually masked and looks not suspicious (may be a pack of juice or cigarettes you just take and continue walking).

I was surprised, really. Looks like I am too oldschool already - thought cash rules the world. While nowadays you may anonymously exchange crypto to cash - so for all illegal payments this became option #1. So now the dealing process looks like this - you find some messenger contacts of a local dealer (ask google or local barman), contact him and choose what you want to order, pay in crypto and get your stuff delivered to some pre-selected place (that may be your hotel). Personal meetings are something dealers try to avoid - so weed is usually dropped at some approximate point you firstly discuss, and you get photo and GPS coordinates where to take your package after delivery.
