Weed in Kuching, Malaysia: my experience

Hi, smokers! You probably know that cannabis laws and regulations vary from one county to another, so let’s go deeper and try to understand what is going on with weed in Kuching. My post covers information about weed laws, regulations, general attitude of locals and cops, hash VS weed availability and pricing, failures and success in finding weed in Kuching.

I have just finished my trip to Kuching, stayed there for 10 days, now got back home, writing this post while memory is fresh and with a solid joint in my left hand. As a regular weed smoker I could not imagine my stay in Kuching without having some weed in my pocket. Below I will outline information I found out while looking for some good smelly green buds in Kuching.

Local attitude towards weed and cannabis in Kuching

Although only medical cannabis is allowed in Kuching, the locals are absolutely ok with the smokers. Local dealers have big cash from the students and tourists, so they are their weed target audiences in Kuching. You shouldn't allow yourself to smoke anywhere, for example in bars, but nobody is surprised if you get caught smoking weed in a secluded corner of the street.

One more interesting fact from my new friend John - even some cops in Kuching prefer smoking weed over drinking strong. So as I understood Kuching is a good place for smokers of marijuana because of the light atmosphere, but all the same the best rule is not to be caught with weed in Kuching 😉.

Generally, the local stance on cannabis is quite laid-back, so you might start feeling at ease in Kuching after enjoying a single quality joint, and I can attest to this from my own experience. John graciously shared a wonderfully satisfying sativa joint with me, even though he wasn't sure about the specific strain. We were indulging outside a bar and noticed other individuals across the street doing the same 😁. It's safe to say that cannabis consumption is quite prevalent in Kuching.

I inquired with John about the possibility of obtaining his dealer's contact information because the quality of the product was exceptional. He explained that his specific dealer doesn't take on new clients, so he graciously offered to be my supplier during my vacation, which turned out to be an ideal arrangement. I hope everyone has the chance to encounter their own John in one of Kuching's bars.

Cannabis regulations in Kuching, Malaysia

It's crucial to emphasize that cannabis, marijuana, and hashish are strictly prohibited in Kuching. You won't find coffee shops selling high-THC marijuana strains here. While medical CBD cannabis might be accessible through licensed dispensaries, it necessitates a doctor's prescription, and it's essential to note that CBD doesn't produce psychoactive effects.

While at a club, I had the opportunity to meet John, who relocated to Kuching three years ago and is well-versed in the local drug culture. According to John, despite the legal prohibition of cannabis, law enforcement officers generally adopt a lenient attitude towards marijuana, with some even being cannabis enthusiasts themselves.

What if I get caught with weed in Kuching?

In practice, as John said - if you are 18+ and carry less than 20 grams of weed or 10 grams of hash and do not smoke in public - you should not expect any arrest. As a maximum, cops will confiscate your stuff after they ensure you are not a dealer who delivers stuff.

There are some stories about occasional cops forcing people to give them a bribe after catching someone with weed, but such cases are rare. Usually cops do not touch foreign tourists who are spending their vacation or business trip in Kuching and bring money to Malaysia.

So where do smokers purchase weed in Kuching?

Despite the fact that I did not have any problems with weed in Kuching because of John, he told me how everything works (and not only with cannabis).

Usually high-level dealers purchase stuff on wholesale darknet websites. Theoretically you may also go through all the nightmare of using darknet websites to get your stuff delivered in several days or even weeks. Website thehiddenwiki.com has all the links you may need to order stuff in the darknet using Tor browser and crypto, but this method usually works if you need a lot of stuff and have time (several days) to wait for the delivery.

But if you have a short trip to Kuching or vacation + need not too much weed and right now - only small local dealers may help you. Walking dark streets in a search for a strange-looking person who will sell you something that looks like weed for cash is still an option, but this is not the best way to spend time in Kuching and does not guarantee you any success. Today almost all dealers went online already, so they arrange the delivery of stuff after taking crypto instead of cash. They try to avoid meetings in person so you just select the approximate drop off point, and get a photo where exactly to take your stuff after the delivery. Stuff is usually masked and looks not suspicious (may be a pack of juice or cigarettes you just take and continue walking).

I was surprised, really. Looks like I am too oldschool already - thought cash rules the world. While nowadays you may anonymously exchange crypto to cash - so for all illegal payments this became option #1. So now the dealing process looks like this - you find some messenger contacts of a local dealer (ask google or local barman), contact him and choose what you want to order, pay in crypto and get your stuff delivered to some pre-selected place (that may be your hotel). Personal meetings are something dealers try to avoid - so weed is usually dropped at some approximate point you firstly discuss, and you get photo and GPS coordinates where to take your package after delivery.
