You can probably guess that distribution of non-medical cannabis is strictly forbidden and regulated by laws of Brazil, so you can not purchase high THC weed in some official shops like you may do in the Netherlands for example.

On my very first day in Manaus I got acquainted with Alex who has lived here for 3 years already and who is also a regular cannabis smoker. He shared a joint with me and told some stories. As he told that despite non-medical weed being prohibited - cops are relaxed and calm in everything related to cannabis, with some rare exceptions.

What if I get caught with weed in Manaus?

In practice, as Alex said - if you are 18+ and carry less than 20 grams of weed or 10 grams of hash and do not smoke in public - you should not expect any arrest. As a maximum, cops will confiscate your stuff after they ensure you are not a dealer who delivers stuff.

There are some stories about occasional cops forcing people to give them a bribe after catching someone with weed, but such cases are rare. Usually cops do not touch foreign tourists who are spending their vacation or business trip in Manaus and bring money to Brazil.

Attitude of locals to cannabis in Manaus

Even though high THC cannabis is strictly regulated in Manaus - local inhabitants of Manaus are not against it at all. Young people and tourists are top target audiences for weed dealers. This does not mean you may walk and smoke joints on the streets, but also no one will be too surprised seeing someone smoking weed.

As Alex told - even local cops in Manaus sometimes use cannabis. So in general we may conclude that the atmosphere in Manaus is relaxed when we speak about cannabis. Just behave correctly and watch your back - and everything should be cool.

Generally, the local stance on cannabis is quite laid-back, so you might start feeling at ease in Manaus after enjoying a single quality joint, and I can attest to this from my own experience. Alex graciously shared a wonderfully satisfying sativa joint with me, even though he wasn't sure about the specific strain. We were indulging outside a bar and noticed other individuals across the street doing the same 😁. It's safe to say that cannabis consumption is quite prevalent in Manaus.

I inquired with Alex about the possibility of obtaining his dealer's contact information because the quality of the product was exceptional. He explained that his specific dealer doesn't take on new clients, so he graciously offered to be my supplier during my vacation, which turned out to be an ideal arrangement. I hope everyone has the chance to encounter their own Alex in one of Manaus's bars.

Usually, law enforcement tends to be lenient with tourists, and if they don't suspect you of dealing, they will most likely let you go.

Based on what I observed, super high-quality weed can cost between $20 to $25 per gram (with discounts for larger quantities), and high-quality hash typically ranges from $30 to $35 per gram. I haven't purchased low-quality weed in Manaus, so I'm not sure about the prices for that, but they should generally be lower.
